When I took this shot, I had intended to capture the light reflecting off the shiny surface of the rim of the wheel of a tour coach.
With only a small 2 inch LCD viewer on my Canon G6, I hardly noticed that there were lots of tiny smudges of dirt on the rim and had thought I would be getting a nice clean shot of shiny light bouncing off the surface. I guess the bright sunlight reflecting off the rim had probably also made it difficult for me to really see those mini blotches on the surface clearly.
So to my utter disappointment, when I finally open up the photo on my PC, I could see all these tiny patches of dirt and the metal surface was not clean at all.
To be honest, I was debating whether to even post this today as I wasn’t pleased with the fact that the surface was not clear and not as shiny as I had wanted it to be.
But as I thought it over, I realized that even in an imperfect picture, one can learn a thing or two about life. So I decided to post it and share my reflections on it.
First, never assume that what you first perceived is what it is because your biased views may give you a false impression. Our preconceived ideas that we already have in our minds can cause us to wrongly perceive or not perceive what is actually there. That was why I didn’t see the dirt on the rim because firstly they were too tiny to have been perceived on the small LCD viewer of my camera and secondly, all I saw was bright shiny light because that was what I had been thinking of capturing in my mind.
Second, the bright shiny light bouncing off the surface can blind a person from seeing clearly what is actually there. So in a way, when we allow something to become over intense in our lives, it can blind us from perceiving clearly.
Last, but not the least, is the thought that the reason why the shine and reflection on the surface of the rim became unclear was mainly because of the many tiny speckles of dirt left on the surface. A thought struck me that sometimes in our own lives we aren’t shining as clearly as we can be all because we allow tiny patches of dirt to accumulate on the surfaces of our lives. If we would just take time and make efforts to clean away the blotches of dirt, then we’ll be able to shine and reflect more clearly.
Those are the thoughts that came to my mind when I reflected over this "imperfect" shot.
So what about you? What do you see in such dirtied light? :)

Interesting shot and thoughts. What I think after reading your text is that dirt doesn't make the wheel stop. It is still working. Also dirt can make it (and the car) look adventurous, look like something that is not just shiny-glittery-glossy-glamourous but has its dirty sides, too. So the wheel has to live with dirt but of course sometimes it needs polishing. Just like everything/ everyone else. :)

First impressiosns can be skewed! You must take the time to push away the "dirt" and find out what beauty lies beneath. Wonderful shot and commentary.

Beauty in imperfection? YES!! Nice one...

But doesn’t the dirt make the wheel look more interesting? All the imperfections and differences, that’s what’s attracting. If it was spotless clean, it would be fake. It’s impossible to be perfect when everything is spinning all around us at such a speed

I like it. Its shiny in one part and rough in another

K, you always astound me with your thoughts!! But that's what we're all doing here... trying to get people to see the world the way we do. Capturing a moment that moved us either because of it's beauty or because of the dirt beneath the surface. So then it comes down to our own interpretation when viewing the image. Perception, interpretation, preconceived ideas/thoughts, bias... it's all what leads us down the road to whatever final journey is there. If I were to have posted this image I may have called it "What lies beneath" to lead the viewer (because I'm usually too lazy to write the commentaries you do so eloquently) to hopefully see what I was thinking when I took the image. Shrug... That's my tilt on it. Too much said? Hope not... keep on with your astounding observations, my friend, and the insightful photography you do. ;-)

A fantastic detail stolen from a common object...that's what I see! To me "the dirty spots" aren't imperfections, because they are a part of the whole. In the end all that matters is the way we look around. Expectations are a great thing, but we shouldn't be too much affected by them. If we're searching for a "shiny surface" and we end with a muddy one, we have to be clever enough to make the best of it.

Excellent light play. I didn't notice the dust as dust until you mentioned it. I was too mesmerized by the glow.

Percieved notion and realization - these are such important aspect of our life. I think most of the time we just percieve what we want to - and leave at that. If you could come to realization on the second aspect of that perception....many things can sort out. However this outpouring is based on your words - which again I admit - move me a lot . Now to personal - what I saw - Tiger Eye ???? you can laugh and if you think I should seek help....I will not be offended....lol :-) Tk care and have a gr8 weekend...see you next week !
