Life – Setting Lights

It’s Saturday. Time again to wind down and relax.

This sunset shot was taken at Labrador Park which faces the sea along the south-western coast of Singapore. Labrador Park is also the place where one of the many old British artillery batteries was located. You can still see the various military structures located up on the ridge above the coastal park below. There’s even an old gun on display. These were huge powerful guns which saw action during World War II. While it was supposed to protect and defend “Fortress Singapore” from a sea attack from the south but the Japanese attack came from the North via Thailand and Malaysia.

Many believed erroneously that these guns could not be used against the Japanese coming from the North as they were stocked more with armour-piercing ammunition then anti-personnel rounds. The truth was that the concrete structure the guns were mounted on, were unfortunately designed such that the guns could not be turned back 180 degrees to face North. And so quite a number of these huge guns could not be used to defend Singapore from the attack coming down from Malaysia all because the military leaders and commanders thought the attack would come from the sea. How important it is to have good and wise leaders.

Well, that was a little history regarding Labrador Park for you.

As for the shot, you can see the silhouettes of the huge cranes used for moving the cargo containers from the ships that dock at our deep-sea ports. Singapore owes much of her survivability and economic growth to our ports and trading via the sea. And these cranes with their crane operators play an important part behind the scene to ensure precious cargo of food, materials and goods needed for living come through and exports for growth are stacked well on the huge ships to be shipped out to the rest of the world.

Although the sun is setting and it reminds us it’s time to rest, the truth is that activities at these ports hardly stop for 24 hours, seven days a week, 4 weeks a month, 12 months a year and so on. They are constantly operational behind the scene because just like the heart, if it stops working completely then life in Singapore will eventually fade away. They are life-lines. And so they need to have regular checks and maintenances to ensure the ports are continually working 24/7/4/12/so on...

Isn’t that the same with our hearts? It quietly pumps blood throughout our bodies giving and ensuring life continually non-stop. How important it is for us to also maintain it.

So don’t over-stress it. Take care of it and it’ll take care of the rest of your body.

It’s the weekend – time to give your heart a good maintenance break. :)
