Life – Lone Memorial By The Water

Posted by kairospix (Singapore, Singapore) on 24 October 2007 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

This simple lone memorial by the water at Changi Beach was erected to remember the many Chinese who were rounded and executed at the beach by the Japanese soldiers during World War II as part of their campaign to clamp down on Chinese in Singapore who were suspected of supporting the fight against Japanese in mainland China.

What a sad end for these people. I wonder what their last thoughts were as they faced death. Were they thinking about their family? Was fear on their minds? Or did they question if this was how their life would end – executed by the beach? Or was there peace and contentment?

Perhaps all these thoughts and more ran through various minds as they hear the sound of the cocking of the guns as they knelt facing the sea. Loud blasts. Then it was over.

I sometimes wonder when it’s over for me, what will be my last thoughts. Will it be regret or will it be with contentment? And what will be words written on my memorial stone. Sober things to think about.

May we all end well.
