Life – Deciding On Who Would Take The Water Ride

Posted by kairospix (Singapore, Singapore) on 30 October 2007 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

So after the meeting in the shot yesterday, here’s a shot of a smaller group deciding on who would take the water ride on the bright yellow canoe.

Decisions - sometimes others like a leader make it for you, other times you have to make it with others involved and then there are times you have to make it alone.

It’s always easier to have someone else make the decision for us. We don’t have to do so much hard thinking and take on so much stress. And if anything goes wrong we can complain and blame it on someone else.

It’s more comforting to make decisions in a group as it gives you a sense of belonging and it doesn’t make you stick out like a sore thumb. It also makes you psychologically feel “safe” that you didn’t make a mistake because there’s safety in numbers. If anything goes wrong you can always say it was a group decision and absolve personal responsibilities.

But leaders can be dangerous – remember Jones Town? And thinking as homogenous group can be blinding – remember Water Gate Scandal?

Leaving others to make decisions for us or to go along with others may seem to give us less dissonance and vapour a puff of apparent peaceful certainty. But beware vapours vapourised easily.

At the end of the day you still have to think things through critically and make critical decisions on your own responsibly.

Have a great decision making week ahead!
