Here’s a shot of three students wearing different traditional ethinic clothing of different cultures in Singapore.
The guy in the middle was wearing traditional clothing for Indians and the extreme right chap was wearing that of the Malays. No prizes for who was wearing the traditional clothing for Chinese.
Part of the educational aims for students in Japane was having a more internationalised out-look and hence the Japanese Government created the Japan-Exchange Teaching (JET) programme which would expose the Japanese students to teachers from other cultures around the world. They call such a process is called “Internationlization”.
So my first meeting and lesson with each new class would always be one about Singapore and her various cultures. The students would always get a kick out of watching three of their classmates wearing these costumes and have a good time learning about other cultures.
Maybe we need to have such internationalisation programmes in classes all over the world so that the younger generation can learn to understand, appreciate and accept such cultural differences. Surely this is another small step towards world peace?
