So here’s a shot of students doing their class presentation in English.
If you look carefully, you would notice that there are several teachers in the class.
Why so many teachers? Well, these teachers are from other schools and they are actually observing what Japanese teachers call a “demonstration class”. One of my fellow Japanese teachers of English was fortunately or unfortunately chosen to have her class observed by other teachers.
If you observe carefully, the man seated at the desk is some senior educator who is making notes for an evaluation later. So you can understand how the teacher being observed feels…
I guess we all will in one way or another be observed by others and it’s natural to have some “nerves”. But if we just do our best and hang the rest, I think it doesn’t really matter who is observing and what they have to say later.
Take what you think it’s fair and good constructive feedback and leave what’s not helpful behind.

Great B&W picture of Japanese education culture! Europeans notice immediately their sitting on mats.
