It’s the start of another week.
As I look at this sunrise shot how I wish I was on that plane too flying off to a far away place for a nice holiday!
I wonder how the sun would look like from inside the plane. From my vantage point the sun doesn’t seem to look that bright compared to those viewing it from inside the plane. For them it probably looks much brighter and bigger since they are closer to it.
This brings me to the thought that sometimes in life the same thing may look one way to one person but could be entirely different for another.
I’m sure we all know about the proverbial cup with only half the amount of water in it. To one person it would mean that the cup is only half-full but to another it’s only half-empty! The argument goes then that the situation can look positive if we choose to see it that way.
Yet I cannot help but also notice that perceptions are different simply because the context in which two different person viewing the same situation may be entirely different. In other words, perceptions are relative. But relative to what? Relative to how we are experiencing the same situation differently. From someone on the plane and closer to the sun, it would look a lot brighter and bigger but to me looking at it from a greater distance away, it doesn’t look that big and bright.
Likewise, someone with a dire need for water to remain alive compared to one who is just experiencing normal thirst for the moment, would respond very differently to the cup half-filled with water.
While having a positive mental attitude is good and helpful, we shouldn’t be too quick to assume that someone who might have a less positive outlook means she or he is just being negative. Relatively, she or he may be in a context that’s less positive than ours to begin with.
I guess an old Indian proverb is something we need to remind ourselves every time we are tempted to conclude about someone whom we may not have the highest respect for or are angry with or do not agree to – “Do not judge your brother until you have worn his moccasins for six months.”
Things can be relatively different to different people just like how we experience the relative light intensity of the sun under the context of differing distances. It’s always good to hold back your horses every now and then simply because we may not always know the full context that others are in. ;-)
May you have a relatively good week ahead! :)
